Concussion Guide

Parent and Student Athlete Guide to Possible Concussion

These guidelines were developed by Grain Valley Schools in conjunction with Centerpoint Medical Center.

Your son or daughter has a possible concussion…

Please carefully observe your student for signs of concussion. They can appear immediately. One or more signs are possible. In some instances, the signs of a concussion do not become obvious for several hours or the next day. Below are a list of signs and symptoms:

  • Mental confusion/behavior changes
  • Dizziness
  • Memory loss
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Changes in balance
  • Headache
  • Nausea/vomiting*
  • Blurry or double vision*
  • Seizure activity*
  • Slurred speech*
  • Difference in pupil size/dilated pupils*
  • Decreased/irregular pulse/respiration's*
  • Changes in level of consciousness*

*if these symptoms appear, please contact 911 or seek immediate medical attention.

What do I do if my child has symptoms?

  • Follow up with Grain Valley athletic trainer Jason Means at (913) 461-1178, the next day; and/or
  • Take child to see physician at Centerpoint Sports Medicine
(Contact info on reverse side); or
  • If you must see your family or other physician, please bring their
recommendations to the Grain Valley High School Activities office and to our athletic trainer.

What do I do if my child does not have symptoms?

  • May return to school.
  • See school staff in the health room if symptoms appear at school.
  • Check in with our athletic trainer prior to returning to practice or game. The athletic trainer determines when the child is able to return to practice or games, even if symptoms have not occurred.
Possible Return-to-Play Progression Steps
For return to participation back into actitives
If your son or daughter is diagnosed with a concussion, you should be given a list of instructions or recommendations from the physician that outlines the plan for recovery and progression to full participation. The plan may or may not include all of the following steps.

Academics
Your student may receive possible academic restrictions or accommodations during the recovery period.

Physical restrictions
Your student will receive physical restrictions during the recovery
period. The athletic trainer will oversee the physical “progression.”

Release to Participate
Before returning to practice, playing, performing, etc, the child must
have been cleared by first the physician, then by our athletic trainer.

If my student has a concussion, what are the next steps?

  • Rest.
  • Avoid activities that cause
    irritation (i.e. tv, computer,
    video games, loud noises, bright
    lights).
  • No physical activity,
    including weights or PE.
  • Possible physician follow-up (if advised during initial visit).
  • Begin Return-to-Play
    Progression Steps with
    athletic trainer per
    physician instructions.
  • Release by physician, then also by our athletic trainer.
