AP/Dual Credit

General Information

Students attending Grain Valley High School have the opportunity to earn several college credits while attending high school. There are three ways students can do this.

The AP program allows students who take an AP course to take a test in May and earn college credit for that course. Students earn credit based on their score and the course, anywhere from 3-10 college credit hours can be earned from a single test. Taking the test is compulsory if a student enrolls in an AP class.

Dual credit classes offer students a chance to dual enroll (high school and college) and receive college credit. Their grade in the course becomes their grade for both the high school and college credit. Students who enroll in a dual credit course do not have to enroll for college credit.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) classes can earn college credit or scholarships which varies by institution. Credit is awarded based on a free test taken during the class as well as their grade in the class.

PLTW Credit

Students can gain college credit by taking PLTW courses. They can do this by maintaining a course grade of 85%, and passing the PLTW EOC with a 6 or higher. The number and type of credit awarded varies by institution. Depending on the High School PLTW program some students can earn up to 12 credit hours. Cost varies by institution. Other institutions offer scholarships to PLTW students as well. Talk to a PLTW teacher or visit pltw.org for more specific information.
