The academic program is organized on a rotating block schedule. Students can take eight courses (four credits) per semester. Students need 28 credits (four more than the state required minimum) to graduate from Grain Valley High School. Each student must complete a community service graduation requirement. Classes are 90 minutes with a one-day per week 45-minute advisement period.

Grain Valley High School fully utilizes standards-based grading based upon the research model from Marzano Research Laboratory. Standards-based grading measures what a student should know and be able to do upon completion of a course according to proficiency levels set forth by the Grain Valley School District which are aligned with Missouri standards. Under the standards-based system, students are graded on their achievement on class content. Work habits such as class participation and attendance are recorded separately.

All courses in grades 9-12 are used in computing grade point averages. Grade point average is figured on the traditional 4-point system with more rigorous courses receiving a weighted value from .333 to a 1.0. Grade point average is reported at the end of each semester.
Graduates are honored based on GPA with the following thresholds: Summa Cum Laude (4.00 and above), Magna Cum Laude (3.800 to 3.999) and Cum Laude (3.700 to 3.799).

Grain Valley High School is an A+ certified high school. Students who complete all A+ program requirements are eligible to receive up to two years (six semesters) of tuition and general fees to attend any Missouri public two-year community college or vocational/technical institution.

The role of the high school activities program is to teach, promote, and build character and skills for all of those involved.
