Grain Valley High School

 

ACCREDITATION
Grain Valley High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is accredited with distinction by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

ENROLLMENT
Grain Valley High School is a comprehensive four-year high school with approximately 1,300 students in grades 9 through 12.

COMMUNITY
Grain Valley Schools is located near Kansas City in eastern Jackson County, Missouri. The district covers approximately 40 square miles with a population of over 18,000 and a total student population of over 4,000. The Grain Valley Schools is one of the fastest growing districts in Missouri.

CURRICULUM
The academic program is organized on a rotating block schedule. Students can take eight courses (four credits) per semester. Students need 28 credits (four more than the state required minimum) to graduate from Grain Valley High School. Each student must complete a community service graduation requirement. Classes are 90 minutes with a one-day per week 45-minute advisement period.

GRADING & ASSESSMENT
Grain Valley High School fully utilizes standards-based grading based upon the research model from Marzano Research Laboratory. Standards-based grading measures what a student should know and be able to do upon completion of a course according to proficiency levels set forth by the Grain Valley School District which are aligned with Missouri standards. Under the standards-based system, students are graded on their achievement on class content. Work habits such as class participation and attendance are recorded separately.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)
All courses in grades 9-12 are used in computing grade point averages. Grade point average is figured on the traditional 4-point system with more rigorous courses receiving a weighted value from .333 to a 1.0. Grade point average is reported at the end of each semester.
Graduates are honored based on GPA with the following thresholds: Summa Cum Laude (4.00 and above), Magna Cum Laude (3.800 to 3.999) and Cum Laude (3.700 to 3.799).

A+ PROGRAM

Grain Valley High School is an A+ certified high school. Students who complete all A+ program requirements are eligible to receive up to two years (six semesters) of tuition and general fees to attend any Missouri public two-year community college or vocational/technical institution.

ATHLETICS & EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The role of the high school activities program is to teach, promote, and build character and skills for all of those involved. Involvement in the activities program assists students in becoming high-functioning adults who can succeed in society by using the qualities promoted by the individual programs, coaches, teammates, and the overall activities program philosophy. Grain Valley High School joined the Suburban Conference beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

The activities and athletics of GVHS are governed by the Missouri State High School Athletic Association. Opportunities are available in the following: baseball, softball, basketball, cheer, choir, show choir, color guard, cross country, debate, dance, football, golf, marching band, soccer, tennis, theatre, track, volleyball, wrestling, swimming & diving, National Honor Society, and student council. The GVHS Marching Ensemble was selected for the 2016 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

School Hours

The office is open from 7:00am - 3:30pm.

School is in session from 7:35 am - 2:35 pm.

All visitors must sign in and out when entering and leaving the building.

Doors will open at 7:00 am.
